HEAD LOSS ASSUMPTIONS The Head loss estimator is an extension in reasoning from the pool calculator. The pool calculator tells you what size pipe to use for your flow range. The head loss calculator asks for that pipe size and assumes the same range of pump flows that that size pipe was indicated for. This simplifies the math necesary to estimate the flow resistance in equivalent feet produced by elbows to a straight line equation relationship to pipe size:
Even so, the relationship between pipe size and feet of head is not linear and is expressed in the following graph. Remember, in each case as represented above, flow is assumed to vary with the pipe size, being greater for larger size and less for smaller size.
